Fashion U part three: Inside the Teen Vogue fashion closet

October 30, 2009

When I was a little girl I used to daydream of one day having a walk-in closet so big I could live there. I would literally live, eat and sleep fashion. In fact, I still daydream about the day I have my own huge walk-in closet.

As one of my seminars, I signed up to go on the Teen Vogue editorial floor tour where I got to see a behind-the-scenes look at where my favorite magazine is made each month.

Teen Vogue fashion market editor Mary Kate Steinmiller and fashion assistant Justin Berkowitz showed Fashion U students memorable places in the office as well shared magazine secrets.

I got to see offices of the editors, including editor-in-chief Amy Astley’s office… the art department and production area, the beauty closet and the what they consider the “heart and soul” of the magazine… the fashion closet.

Check out some photos I took from the editorial floor tour!

Fashion U part II: Let’s talk style with Eric Daman

October 27, 2009

If there was one thing I learned listening to Gossip Girl costume designer and creative director for Charlotte Russe, Eric Daman, it’s great style cannot be purchased.

Everyday we are bombarded by advertisements from businesses about the hottest trends and the fashion must-haves but we often forget it’s not always about how much you have, it’s how you wear it.

It’s inspiring to see a stylist in the fashion industry that works with designer fashions on a day-to-day basis on the set of Gossip Girl but at the same time work with a company that sells apparel for a lower cost.

Daman spoke about some popular trends this season including big shoulder pads, holiday sparkle, draping tops and sweaters, the 30s flapper, headbands (thank you Blair Waldorf!) and black & white designs. And as a gift to students who attended his seminar, we received 20% cards to Charlotte Russe and a silver necklace.

Check out this video I took of two other popular looks you may see this season!

Fashion University recap part one

October 26, 2009

Words cannot describe just how amazing my trip to NYC & Teen Vogue’s Fashion University was… which is why I’m recapping it with pictures!

I got to meet Teen Vogue editors, fashion designers, stylists and people in the marketing/business of fashion. It was a weekend well-spent making great networking connections, meeting other aspiring editors, learning about the fashion world from the best in the business and all while looking stylish!

Take a look at some pictures from the Juicy Couture retail event I attended on Friday night. Stay tuned for more photos from the seminars I attended and video of our keynote speaker Diane von Furstenberg!

Me and my knight in shining armor… Juicy Couture armor that is!

PA231452This is me after I made a purchase. I found a pair of black suede ‘mary jane’ heels with studs on the strap. (I will post pics of them soon!) They were originally $325 but they were on sale for $156 Good deal, eh?

Countdown to Fashion U

So I am literally marking X’s on my calendar as I anxiously wait for October 23rd, or in other words, the kick-off for Teen Vogue’s Fashion University 2009.

Last year I went and it was an amazing networking experience. I got to meet holy fashion designers and magazine editors right in the heart of New York City.

This year, there will be seminars featuring designers Kimora Lee Simmons (the designer for Baby Phatt), Derek Lam, Thakoon, Cynthia Rowley, Rebecca Minkoff and so many others.

I already signed up for the seminars I want to attend and I am so eager to meet Eric Daman, the costume designer for the hit show Gossip Girl. I also get to listen to Frances Pennington, a marketer for Juicy Couture which for me is a HUGE deal because Juicy Couture is one of my favorite brands. In addition to getting a tour of Teen Vogue offices, I also get to listen to fashion & style bloggers.

And, to celebrate beforehand, Juicy Couture is hosting a special retail kick-off event at their flagship store on 5th Avenue. H&M is also hosting a special retail event the following evening.

So now the most important question is, what should I wear?
